What is Depression?

Depression is a mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed. It can also involve changes in sleep, appetite, energy levels, and concentration. Depression in adolescents can significantly affect their relationships, school performance, and overall quality of life.

It is estimated that approximately 13-20% of adolescents experience depression at some point.

Types of Depression

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): Characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in most activities for at least two weeks. It can also involve physical symptoms such as changes in sleep, appetite, and energy levels.

  • Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia): A chronic form of depression lasting for at least two years, with symptoms that are less severe than major depressive disorder but more long-lasting. Individuals may experience periods of more severe depression alongside ongoing, milder symptoms.

  • Bipolar Depression: Occurs in individuals with bipolar disorder, featuring episodes of major depression alternating with periods of mania or hypomania (elevated mood and energy). During depressive episodes, symptoms are similar to those of major depressive disorder.

  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): A type of depression that occurs at specific times of the year, usually in the winter months when there is less sunlight. Symptoms may include increased sleep, weight gain, and withdrawal from social activities.

  • Atypical Depression: A subtype of major depressive disorder where individuals may temporarily experience improved mood in response to positive events. Other symptoms can include increased appetite, excessive sleep, and heightened sensitivity to rejection.

  • Postpartum Depression: A type of depression that can occur in women after childbirth, involving feelings of extreme sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion that interfere with the ability to care for oneself or the baby.

  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): A severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that includes significant mood disturbances, such as irritability, anxiety, and depression, occurring in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.
