What is Suicidal Ideation?

Suicidal ideation refers to thoughts of wanting to end one's life, which can range from fleeting considerations to detailed planning. It is a serious mental health concern that often coexists with conditions like depression, anxiety, or trauma. Approximately 12-18% of adolescents experience suicidal thoughts, highlighting the need for timely intervention and support.

Types of Suicidal Ideation

There are two main types of suicidal ideation:

  1. Passive Suicidal Ideation: This involves thoughts of wanting to die or the wish to not be alive anymore, without specific plans or intent to take one's life.

  2. Active Suicidal Ideation: This includes having thoughts about suicide along with a plan or intent to carry it out.

Symptoms of Suicidal Ideation

  • Expressing Hopelessness: Verbalizing feelings of being trapped, having no purpose, or that life isn’t worth living.

  • Withdrawal: Isolating from friends, family, and activities they once enjoyed.

  • Behavioral Changes: Increased risk-taking, giving away possessions, or talking about death and dying frequently.
