Condition

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

Our expert providers work closely with patients to create individualized treatment plans for oppositional defiant disorder, incorporating behavioral strategies and, when needed, medication management. Our goal is to help individuals manage their symptoms, foster positive behaviors, and succeed in their daily lives.

What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder?

A behavioral condition characterized by a consistent pattern of defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior towards authority figures, often accompanied by irritability and frequent temper tantrums. Adolescents with ODD may argue with adults, deliberately defy rules, and struggle with managing anger or frustration.

It is estimated that about 3-16% of children and adolescents are affected by ODD, with symptoms typically appearing during early adolescence.

Types of Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) can be categorized into different types based on the severity of symptoms:

  1. Mild ODD: Symptoms occur only in one setting, such as at home, school, or with peers. Children with mild ODD may only display problematic behavior in specific environments.

  2. Moderate ODD: Symptoms are present in at least two settings, such as both at home and school. This type indicates a greater level of impairment and behavioral challenges.

  3. Severe ODD: Symptoms are evident in three or more settings, such as at home, school, and during social activities. Children with severe ODD exhibit more intense behaviors and may have significant difficulties in multiple areas of their life.

Symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder

  • Frequent Anger and Irritability: The child or adolescent often loses their temper, is easily annoyed, and frequently feels resentful or angry.

  • Argumentative and Defiant Behavior: Persistent arguing with authority figures, refusing to comply with requests or rules, deliberately annoying others, and blaming others for their mistakes or misbehavior.

  • Vindictiveness: Displaying spiteful or vindictive behavior, which can include seeking revenge or acting maliciously, often at least twice within six months.
