Condition

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Our expert providers collaborate with patients to create individualized treatment plans for obsessive-compulsive disorder, incorporating behavioral strategies and, when appropriate, medication management. Our goal is to help individuals manage their symptoms, reduce obsessive thoughts and compulsions, and lead more balanced, fulfilling lives.

What is OCD?

A condition characterized by persistent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) aimed at reducing anxiety caused by these thoughts. Obsessions often revolve around fears of contamination, harm, or the need for symmetry, while compulsions are repetitive actions, such as excessive handwashing, checking, or counting, performed to relieve distress.

Types of OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can manifest in different forms, typically categorized by the nature of the obsessions and compulsions. The main types of OCD include:

  1. Contamination and Cleaning: Involves an intense fear of germs, contamination, or illness, leading to compulsive cleaning, handwashing, or avoiding perceived sources of contamination.

  2. Doubt and Checking: Characterized by fears of harm or mistakes, resulting in repeated checking behaviors, such as ensuring doors are locked or appliances are turned off, often driven by doubts about safety.

  3. Symmetry and Ordering: An obsession with symmetry, precision, or exactness, which leads to compulsions to arrange or reorder items until they feel "just right."

  4. Unacceptable or Taboo Thoughts: Involves intrusive thoughts that are violent, sexual, or religious in nature, often leading to mental rituals or compulsive behaviors to neutralize the distress.

  5. Hoarding: Difficulty discarding items due to fears of needing them in the future, often resulting in the excessive accumulation of objects, which can create significant clutter and disorganization.

Symptoms of OCD

  • Obsessions: Persistent, intrusive thoughts, urges, or images that cause anxiety or distress. Common obsessions include fears of contamination, doubts about safety, intrusive violent or inappropriate thoughts, or a need for symmetry and order.

  • Compulsions: Repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce anxiety or prevent a feared event. Examples include excessive handwashing, checking, counting, organizing, or repeating words silently.

  • Time-Consuming Nature: The obsessions and compulsions are time-consuming, often taking up more than an hour each day, and can significantly interfere with daily life, relationships, or academic performance.
